So it has been just over 4 months and I have composted close to 130litres of kitchen scraps. I just read that sentence and I am rather shocked at the waste (I really need to think about what is being chucked in the bucket!). Nevertheless, composting on the road is much easier than anticipated.
Firstly, a friend of mine told me about the 'sharewaste' app. I have been using this for the last 4 months and donated to locals in Rockhampton and Bundaberg. It is a fantastic app created by a couple in Sydney who had kitchen scraps but no room for a compost bin. They could not fathom sending good food scraps to landfill. The only downside is that it is relatively new and a lot of people who have signed up to receive compost donations never reply. So I am often left hanging and have had to find other solutions.
When we stayed at the Oh Deere Farm Stay (north of Mackay) I asked if I could bury my kitchen scraps. The owner, Dale, said to just dump it on one of the recently burnt sugar cane plots as we was due to run through it with the tractor that day. I was delighted as my bucket was overflowing. More recently (picture above), we found ourselves camped at a fairly remote spot in Western QLD so I decided to bury my scraps as the soil was soft enough to dig a hole.
We have been lucky enough to stay with some friends so I have been able to add to their compost bins, bury in their garden beds or bury under a tree on their property. Everyone is so obliging so it is making the whole process much easier than expected.
Now I really want to encourage others to do the same. The amount of needless waste that travelling caravanners produce that could be taken away from landfill is immense. Perhaps this idea needs more thought.
I will admit, my bokashi bin is not ideal. The waste is not in there long enough to really break down and I never use the juice in the bottom (I have no plants to feed) and the tap gets in the way when I mount the bin inside the clamp on the back of the caravan (spilling juice everywhere) so I probably should have just used a bucket with a good lid.
I will leave you here with my little update and I will continue to find ways to keep our bin empty.
